1. Why does a fire engine respond with the ambulance?

An engine responds with the ambulance to provide additional manpower to assist with providing medical care or assist with extricating a patient. It is better to have too many personnel on scene than too few.

2. Why is it a fire engine and not a pickup truck? Why is that fire engine doing inspections or getting food?

It is very common while performing some of the departments non-emergency duties like inspections, public relations or even the simple act of picking up lunch that an emergency does arise. Being able to respond at a moments notice and having the right tool for the job are tantamount in our profession. You will always hear us say, "seconds count."

1. Does Ashland Fire take cash for permits?

No, cash is not accepted. Please make your check or money order out to the "Town of Ashland."

2. Why can't I have a fire pit?

Open burning is tightly controlled by the State of Massachusetts. Burning brush with a permit during approved times is the only type of open burning that is permitted.

3. I have an appointment for an inspection, why am I given a 2-hour window?

Our inspectors are still firefighters and can be called away for emergencies in town. We make every effort to keep appointments, however, we reserve the right to postpone and cancel shall the need arise.

1. What is the electric horn that can be heard in the vicinity of downtown Ashland?

This is the replacement for Ashland Fire's old fire whistle, it indicates that on-duty resources have been exhausted and recalls any and all off-duty personnel to respond. Members are also alerted by 2-way radio, text message, and email.
